\"Heretic II.iso zipped\" Is the full CD Version of Heretic II. A (Bootable HERETIC_II CD install.iso) of the game with all \"Mods, maps, textures, skins, models, skys, etc... provided in the download links below.
The game was in development since November 1997 by a team of 20 people.[8] Inspired by the Tomb Raider series, Raven Software decided to make use of the Quake II engine to create a third-person action game. A major step in the early development was Gerald Brom's concept art. In a month, the company had programmed the game's camera system. After Activision's approval of the game's demo, Raven Software aimed to get the full game finished by Christmas (it would release just prior to that Thanksgiving). To add to complications, they needed a software renderer to make the game playable to 16-bit users (especially in Europe).
This new perspective on the Heretic/HeXen universe was the biggest critical success in Raven Software's storied history. With dozens of awards and numerous accolades, Heretic II showed the world that third-person action games could be fun and intuitive, while it solidified Raven's reputation as one of the industry's top game developers. The game was published by Activision Inc. and released to the public in 1998. Heretic II was one of the last 3-D action games to ship with fully playable co-operative gameplay. Heretic II has since inspired a new generation of third-person action game development and MODS... a testament to the groundbreaking impact of the title.
Players took the role of a nameless Elven hero (given the name Corvus in Heretic II) whose race, the Sidhe, was nearly annihilated by a horde of evil monsters from another dimension. The first episode of Heretic was released as shareware as a precursor to the full version of the game.
Recognizing the fulfillment of prophecy, the Sidhe refused to follow in the worship of D'Sparil and thus they were set apart from the other people of the world. Once sacred guardians, they were now heretics, hunted and hated everywhere they went. D'Sparil's disciples turned the minds of the seven kings toward conquest of the Sidhe realm, and when the Seven Armies marched upon them, the Sidhe Elders extinguished the sacred flames, destroying them all.
With my configuration the game can run with all renderers but the veritegl32. The results with 3Dfxgl32 renderer are meaningless since I have opengl-based 3dfx emulation, so the result is rather identical to using opengl32.I'd say that opengl32 has the best quality, but it's awfully dark. Default software renderer is probably the one with best playability, but it's a matter of opinions. In any case, the game doesn't react to alt-tabs and other keys, so there's some work to do to make it more window-friendly.
I got my first Heretic 2 full-RIP game with CD audio, working almost ok on Win10.The game checks for the CD at startup, in particular it looks for a CD device labelled HERETIC_II that contains a read-only file setup\\setup.bmp, so you have to copy that file and in a setup subfolder of the virtual cd drive, plus (obviously) place the audio tracks in Music. Then, a strange thing happens (to me at least): if I start the game in \"Adventure\" mode the game crashes. If I start the game in \"Tutorial\" mode, press ESC to get back to main menu and switch to \"Adventure\" mode, it works! I'll try to investigate ....
This is a known thing, it is described here.\" =&sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.old-games.ru%2Fforum%2Fthreads%2Fheretic-2.27081%2F&sandbox=1\"For me it works so, that sometimes it crashed, sometimes not. Loading from save file was usually fine.

Anyways, Heretic II is a very game, but be warned the gameplay is completely different to Heretic 1. It's more like a sort of Tomb Raider, but with a lot more of pole-vaulting and kicking people in the face with both feet. If you like the idea of a third-person Parkour game full of flying kicks, you'll have fun with it.
One thing that impressed me with Heretic II besides what others have mentioned was the multiplayer (and I'm primarily a SP guy) side of things with the blade matches. Back in the day (which I missed) the servers were full of custom maps and players would be lined up to play against one another in arenas. It wasn't until later when the game was in major decline that I started to play online. I'm not even sure if the blade match was intended by the developers or if the fans came up with it. I guess my brain is foggy on that. Due to the various moves with the pole weapon, 1v1 battles were pretty damned fun. The guy in the arena that won, faced the next player in line. The match was over when the kill count was met. I got to play it with a couple online friends, one of whom was the guy who made the TMod. I even went so far as to make a few maps for it, which was pretty interesting. Good times.
Well... got it running on Windows 10. Took forever for the setup to start, the original is a 32 bit process, so of course that wouldn't work. But there is a file in the bin folder on the CD called Demo32.exe which launches the installer. Except it took about 10-15 minutes to actually start the installer. Then I installed the Heretic 1.07 patch and it ran. Except I blew up a barrel right next to me and the game crashed when I tried to reload an earlier save (of which I made two, just in case one got corrupted). Well, restarted the game, crashes when I try to load either save, and it reverted my key bindings after it crashed. And now it starts up in what looks to be a huge low resolution windowed mode, so three quarters of the screen are cut off until I stumble into the video settings menu and turn fullscreen off an on and guess at what resolution I'm setting it to.
I first got my hands on the full version of Heretic II in early 2017 alongside Portal of Praevus to complete my Heretic/Hexen collection. Honestly, it's a pretty good game with enjoyable combat, and the switch to a third-person perspective doesn't stop it from feeling like a competent shooter. I wish I could have experienced the multiplayer at its height, though.
The gameplay differs from Doom seemingly only in setting (medieval fantasy vs. futuristic military/hell). The levels follow the same formula of \"get yellow key to open door to green key which opens door to blue key which leads to exit.\" The original order-by-mail full game consists of three episodes of eight normal and one secret level, with two more added in a licensed retail version (Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders) à la The Ultimate Doom.
Well, sometimes I didn't have a lot of fun. As a PC action game from 1998, the level designers had a mandate that the game had to be full of instant-kill 'fuck you' traps. You'll get slammed by surprise crushers, caught in hidden bear traps, and fried by obscured jets of fire. It's dumb, but it's just how a lot of PC games were at the time. I don't know why this design trend was so in vogue, but the reality of the situation is that you should probably quicksave often. But never on moving platforms. Trust me.
There are some other libraries included - ref_glx.so, ref_soft.so, I can't find correlating libraries I could replace them with, unless ref_glx is just an old version of xcb's glx. Here is a gdb run of the heretic2 binary, but since it has no debug symbols I don't get anything useful.
You can download the full version of Heretic from the download store listed below. If you buy a game you don't only get the full version game, you also support DOS Games Archive. For every sale we receive a small fee from the download store which helps us to keep this free website alive. Thank you and have fun!

However, while playing through The Return of Morcalavin mod, once I reached the end of \"Fairbury Proper 2\" the game crashed while loading the next level and before generating the level-entry autosave. Noclipped to the exit a few more times but always the same outcome. Therefore, I was stuck. Took me a bit of googling to find the workaround. As Martin instructed, used H2Resolution to set the game to 1024x760 and started it without Peixoto's Patch. Had to reply the level, but this time it loaded the next one and created autosave successfully. Restarted the game in 1080p via Peixoto's Patch and continued playing as usual. Unsure whether I just needed a lucky attempt or 1024x760 really helped though. 153554b96e
