The B61-12 uses a 125 pound Mk-83 SCALP nuclear warhead as its primary warhead. The warhead is physically distinct from the casing and transport container. The primary function of the warhead is to penetrate the shaped charge’s liner and detonate high explosive within the liner. The liner, in turn, provides the necessary energy for the high-explosive and maintains the velocity of the projectile.[2]

The warhead also contains three more conventional explosives; two more shaped charges and an insensitive high-explosive. The shaped charges provide the primary fragmentation and effector mass. Their purpose is to convert the energy of the high explosive to kinetic energy, and the shaped charge fragments are used to create the penetration and airblast effects, in addition to adding fragmentation and damage.

In addition to the SCALP warhead, B61-12s also carry the IM-991 "N6 satellite killer" warhead. This is a 512 kg (1,136 lb) dual-purpose nuclear munition for bunker-busting or nuclear standoff attacks.[3]

The delivery system for these weapons are modified B-1 and B-2 models. The B61 is limited to speeds of Mach 1.5 to Mach 2, and altitudes of no more than 45,000 feet (13,705 m).[2] The B61-12 version has been in service since 2019 and is currently undergoing its 12th modification. It is a variable-yield weapon that can be used in a groundburst mode, airburst mode, or fall-out (laydown) mode. The B61-6 has a hollow-charge tail for each warhead, a fuze that can be set to either impact or supersonic detonation, and a chute release to allow the weapon to survive a crash landing in a parachute mode or impact with nearby rock. The bomb's hard nose (or tail) contains two high explosive charges used to push the device over the ground. This enables the warhead to function as a passive bomb.
