Software Medion Nas Server

Then you need to transfer your data to the NAS, so that the NAS can recover from a crash, like in the previous post . After you did this, you need to make a Samba share that you can access from your PC.
I am going to give the NAS a new life, because I am tired of it. I will try to get it away from the clutches of Zyxel and MikroTik and set it up as a Samba share. So if you have a spare NAS lying around, maybe you can try this for your home backup.
Another matter is that the Zyxel OS is not supported by the manufacturer anymore. Apparently, it has to do with the fact that Zyxel is now owned by MikroTik and claims that the Linux OS is no longer open source. And I think that at some point a Zyxel firmware update will break my NAS and also disable the ability to use Linux. The manufacturer has to fix this.
We waited for a solution but none came. At the beginning of this year we decided to replace the old NAS with a new one. The new one is hardware agnostic (it can be a Synology, a QNAP, a QNAP Pro, a QNAP TS-453,...) and runs a rather up-to-date Linux distribution as the OS. The best one for a backup server. This server does not have a web interface as to not slow down the network connection too much and to keep the NAS as it is.
One more thing, because it was requested by some users: It is possible to remove the Linux and Samba software from these Zyxel NAS servers and replace them with the standard Windows software. The steps on the page are pretty clear. At least so far, I have not met a fail state for this workaround.
I think that this is a good approach - no OS on the NAS server. That is the way to go. I have to think about that for some time as well. I did a lot of things on this NAS server which might not be the best approach and I'm afraid to lose all these settings. I might just have a NAS server that is running the latest Ubuntu version somewhere. But I'm not sure. I know that this older Samba server is still running its software in an old version. So I'm glad that they finally released a new version for this. Maybe it will be an option to set it as a trusted Webinterface too? 827ec27edc
