Excellent piece. I’m a newcomer to BSO’s from the UK and my first one is a Peugeot E1110 which I have had since 1988 and have kept in great condition.I must say that the most challenging thing at first was putting it together - I must have taken about an hour of reading and still didn’t feel I understood it all but once I’d done it, the nuts and bolts fell into place and it was a cinch. This is compiled and explained very clearly in this post and it has given me some great advice in my quest for building my own bike. I believe this is the best tip if building your own - REVIEW EVERYTHING and make sure it all fits properly. With regards to the servicebox and the old bike, my advice is much the same. You don’t need one since you can assemble the frame and use the advice within your local bike shop for maintenance until you are ready to sell your bike in a ‘complete package’.
Thanks for this great article- a classic Peugeot & Harbor Freight is an opportunity I'd like to take advantage of. But first I need to get started by searching for some used bicycles. I want to match my skills with a reasonably basic bike. I'm looking for something around $200-250 and would not consider a BSO. As for the old bike, it's been a pleasure to ride and well maintained. Of course it might not have been maintained to the letter, but it's been a pleasure to use, train on and ride for over a decade so far
My bikes are riders, not collectors, but I do love the history behind them. I have spent a lot of my time collecting other bikes from similar or retro era and photographing them. I find that if I have a decent camera, I am usually better at capturing the details of these bikes and not just them being there. d2c66b5586
