You're just not thinking on the same level, and that's fine. It was never about who can own what content. It was about who should have to pay the most for it. The living, breathing copyright holders should have to pay the most for the right to tell others how to use their stuff, and that's why they get to be the copyright holder. It's not because the author somehow got special rights to their work that the living, breathing copyright holder gets to control and profit off of it. The copyright holder has every right to charge at the same rate for all content. Forcing them to give content away for free is like forcing the creators to give the living, breathing copyright holder their work for free -- it doesn't mean anything to the copyright holder, they already had the work. So they get to make as much money on it as they want, because they're not interested in the work, they just want the money. RMS is right. Again. I think the difference between the major Hollywood studios and the content creators is that the major Hollywood studios are not content creators. RMS is right. Again. Posted May 10, 2013 10:01 UTC (Fri) by madhatter (subscriber, #4670) [Link]
No, I think it's the other way around. The Hollywood studios are the living, breathing copyright holders - they are the creators. And they should just have to pay the living, breathing copyright holder for permission to use their stuff. They already get to make all sorts of money off of the living, breathing copyright holders work, why should they get to control the distribution of it? And why should the living, breathing copyright holders get to make as much money as they want off of the living, breathing copyright holders work? It's not like they actually care if you get to copy and share it, they're already making money off of it, they don't even want to do it anymore -- it's just a cost of doing business. RMS is right.
